FESTIVAL
Chhat:-
The tradition of fasting is widely
practiced in the Awadhi society scattered in and around Mid-western Terai like Nawalparasi, Rupandehi, Kapilhastu,Banke,
etc. women practice fasting more than men
Nagpanchami,
Yam Dwitiya, Diwali,etc. are some of the important days for fasting in this
society. There is a tradition of singing songs or rhymes or Bhajans or recting
stories related to the respective God during such fastings. Women mostly fast
to fulfill their wishes.For example:-an unmarried women fasts to get a good
husband with a decent family and a married women fasts for good furtune, well-being.Prosperity
and good health of her own ,her husband and children.
Diwali:
Occurs
on the 15thdays of kartik. It is celebrate in the memory of Ram’s
returns to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile.Laxmi, the goddess of wealth
is worshipped at night . The doors and the gates of their houses are left open
. Such is done to welcome the arrival and entrance o fLaxmi . The poor are
given alms factory workers are given bonus. Merchants, traders and shopkeepers change their account books on
this occasion. The Hindu keep their doors open in honoron of Laxmi to enter the houses . Houses are
cieaned and white washed . They are decorated with pictures, toys and paper
flowers. People paint and polish all wooden and iron things . It is a festival
of three days. Diwali, Govardhan pooja
and Bhai pooja . people buy new clothes , ufensils and packets of
candles or lamps. The children buy fire works
and crackers, sweets are sold in plenty. Sweets and greeting cards are exchanged among friends,
neighbours and relatives. Women prepare special food people lighten their houses
with lamps , candles and electric bulbs.
